At least two squatters escaped a Hilo home that caught fire Thursday morning.
Responding to the 1:20 a.m. alarm, firefighters arrived at a home on Ohai Street to find a single-family home with heavy smoke emanating from a bedroom window and the home’s front door, the Hawaii Fire Department said. Two women, whom the department described as “squatters” escaped the home without injury. A possible third occupant, a man, who notified the women of the fire reportedly left the home before emergency crews arrived.
The fire was contained to one bedroom, a connecting bathroom and portion of a hallway, fire officials said. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
