Police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Nov. 9 and Sunday. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were younger than 21, police said.
Kona officers arrested nine motorists while South Hilo police nabbed three drivers, Puna officers arrested five motorists and South Kohala police cited two drivers.
So far this year, there have been 941 DUI arrests compared with 1,022 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.9 percent.
There have been 1,322 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,375 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.9 percent.
So far this year, there were 17 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 11 during the same period last year, an increase of 54.5 percent.
To date, six fatalities were related to drugs and five to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
