Honolulu visionary, educator, illustrator and artist extraordinaire Solomon Enos was commissioned by the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel to paint a mural which will be hung in the newly renovated Copper Bar.
The first major commission in 50 years, the hotel is keeping with founder Laurance Rockefeller’s vision of making the hotel an art gallery. It was also important to introduce more Hawaiian art into the collection.
Enos states the mural truly belongs to the hotel because, “it was conceived, created and will live here.”
The 22-by-9-foot mural depicts a Kaunaoa lei giving itself back to the ocean.
The mural will be unveiled at the reopening of the Copper Bar in mid-December, wrapping up the hotel’s yearlong 50th anniversary celebration.
