Chamber networking event showcases green business

The Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce invites the public to its monthly AfterHours networking event from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Coconut Grove Marketplace.

Co-hosted by the chamber’s SustAINAbility Committee, Jack’s Diving Locker and Coconut Grove Marketplace, the pau-hana affords attendees the chance to link with other businesses while learning about the local business community. In addition, a green fair will feature area vendors showcasing green goods and services.

Refreshments are served. Cost is $15 for chamber members and first-time, nonmembers or $30 for repeat nonmembers.

State representatives present at forum

Hear the priorities state representatives have set for the upcoming 2016 legislative session during the West Hawaii Forum from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center – County Council Chambers.

The forum will give residents the opportunity to speak directly with state Representatives.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. It is free.

Long distance social work degree program discussed

A meeting at Hawaii Community College Palamanui will provide information about the University of Hawaii at Manoa master of social work degree program that is available in West Hawaii through distance education technology. The session will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The master of social work program staff is recruiting applicants for its new cohort to begin in the fall of 2016. The deadline to apply is Feb. 1, 2016.

Comment sought on Aha Moku Advisory Committee

The Aha Moku Advisory Committee has scheduled a series of public meetings to seek comment as it develops and adopts rules for its operation and administration.

Created by the Legislature in 2012, the committee is attached to the Department of Land and Natural Resources and is mandated to bring the voices of communities to the department on issues related to natural and cultural resources.

A draft rule meeting is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at West Hawaii Civic Center.

Gingerbread house competition to benefit Habitat

The Inaugural Great Gingerbread Competition is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 5 at Daylight Mind Coffee Co.

The Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii event will raise money to build a home for a family of five in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.

Teams of five people can form a “corporate team” for $500 or individuals can be a “master builder” for $100 and families are invited to create a team for $100. Each team or individual will receive a gingerbread kit with candy decorations and refreshments to enjoy during the build time. Each team can purchase add-ons to try and win, and audience members and the builders can purchase slow work down permits and other permits and red flags to raise more money.

Members of the building, real estate, development, rental and general community are invited to participate. The finished gingerbread houses will be judged by local building official celebrities. Prizes will be awarded and the first place winner’s house will be showcased the Christmas Dining with the Chefs that night at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.

The public attend for $5 where they can cheer the teams on or add a layer of red tape.

Hospice of Kona plans Circle of Remembrance

Hospice of Kona invites the community to its annual Circle of Remembrance — an opportunity to remember and honor loved ones.

The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hulihee Palace. Attendees should bring a photo of the person they would like to remember.

Lego day planned at library

The Kailua-Kona Public Library is offering a Lego program for children ages 4 through 11 at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21. The program is limited to the first 20 children and their adult partners. Projects are the property of the library and Lego bricks will be recycled for future programs. Participants may opt to have their creations on display for the month following the program.

Arc of Kona fundraising bazaar set

Arc of Kona will hold its 19th annual bazaar fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on Konawaena School Road in Kealakekua.

The event includes live music, hula and line dancing throughout the day, a silent auction, the popular Trash and Treasure booth, vendors and food. Entrance is free. Parking is available anywhere on Konawaena School Road. Rides will be given up the hill.

All proceeds will help persons with disabilities achieve their dreams and goals.
