HONOLULU (AP) — The traditional Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokulea has arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, marking the halfway point on the crew’s journey around the world.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports (https://bit.ly/1kthnrP ) that the crew arrived in Cape Town early Thursday after leaving Port Elizabeth, South Africa earlier this week.
The crew will spend the next week in Cape Town, with a formal arrival ceremony scheduled for Saturday. A group of about 60 Hawaii educators, students and families will participate in planned activities with the crew during their weeklong stay.
After Cape Town, Hokulea will go into dry dock for two weeks and then traverse the Atlantic Ocean to South America.
The voyaging canoe left Hawaii in May 2014 and is expected to return in 2017.
