Police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Nov. 2 and Sunday. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

Police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Nov. 2 and Sunday. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

Kona District officers arrested 11 motorists for drunken driving while South Hilo police nabbed four drivers, Puna officers cited five drivers and two drivers were arrested by South Kohala police.

So far this year, there have been 922 DUI arrests compared with 996 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.4 percent.

There have been 1,298 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,350 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.9 percent.

So far this year, there were 17 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 11 during the same period last year, an increase of 54.5 percent.

To date, six fatalities were related to drugs and five fatalities were attributed to combination of drugs and alcohol.
