HONOLULU (AP) — A man charged in the death of a man whose body was found dismembered in an Oahu ravine has been sentenced to life in prison.
Bryan Suitt pleaded no contest in August to second-degree murder in connection with the September 2013 death of Alex Gonzales. Suitt was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole Monday, KHON-TV reported (https://bit.ly/1M3AWjd).
Gonzales’ body was discovered dismembered and dumped in a shallow grave along Mililani Memorial Park Road. He had been stabbed 55 times.
Investigators had said they found “overwhelming evidence” pointing to Suitt as a prime suspect, including a receipt found during a search of his Waikiki apartment.
“The police tracked down that receipt and corresponding surveillance footage and found that is was the defendant who purchased on that day a pick and a bow saw,” said deputy prosecutor Scott Bell.
Authorities believed Gonzales was hired to perform “unsanctioned tile work” in the rental apartment, Bell said.
The U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force arrested Suitt at his mother’s home in San Diego. Suitt was then extradited to Hawaii.
