Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Ka Makani Players present “Singin’ in the Rain” starting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the school’s Gates Performing Arts Center in Waimea.
Based on the iconic 1952 movie of the same name, “Singin’ in the Rain” has all the makings of a Tinseltown tabloid headline — the starlet, the leading man and a love affair that could change lives and make or break careers. In silent movies, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are a hot item, but behind the scenes, things aren’t always as they appear on the big screen. Meanwhile, Lamont’s squeaky voice might be the end of her career in “talking pictures” without the help of a talented young actress to do the talking and singing for her.
Performances are 7 p.m. Thursday and Nov. 13 and 14. A matinee is slated Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. Tickets, which only are available at the door, are $10 for adults and $5 for students.
“Singin’ in the Rain” was produced for MGM by Arthur Freed, whose extensive catalog of songs was used for the score. The screenplay was written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, who went on to write lyrics for many successful Broadway shows. The film was directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, and starred Kelly (Don), Debbie Reynolds (Kathy), Donald O’Conner (Cosmo), and Jean Hagen (Lina).
“Singin’ in the Rain” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International. HPA theater instructor Marina Tichotsky is the director, music director and costume designer; Phillip Cheng is orchestra director; Jared Terpak is technical director; and Tani Cordova and Elizabeth McDonald are choreographers. Tap dancing choreography is by student Sarah Rouse. Film is by student Daniel Matsumoto, with Ari Bernstein as video adviser.
The Ka Makani Players cast features Tanner Riley as Don Lockwood; Sarah Rouse as Kathy Seldin; Colby Camero as Cosmo Brown; and Christine Ocheltree as Lina Lamont. Also featured are Kaika Painter as R.F. Simpson; Erika Horton as Dora Bailey; Curtis McMackin as Rod; Patch Wong as Roscoe Dexter; and HPA faculty members in cameo appearances. Sixteen additional HPA students play supporting roles, with 27 more students in the orchestra and assisting with production.
