Police are reminding the public never to give personal information to anyone over the telephone whom you did not call or who is not known to you.

Police received several calls Nov. 4 from members of the public who reported they were called by someone claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service asking for their personal information. Instructions from the official IRS website say that if you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, you should:

— Record the employee’s name, badge number, call back number and caller ID if available.

— Call 800-366-4484 to determine if the caller is an IRS employee with a legitimate need to contact you.

— If the person calling you is an IRS employee, call them back.

— If not, report the incident to the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration and to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov (Subject: “IRS Phone Scam”)
