High surf advisory in effect for Kona Coast

High surf has reached the Kona Coast, just in time for Aloha Friday, forecasters said Friday morning.

A high surf advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Friday for west-facing shores of the Big Island’s Kona Coast, the National Weather Service in Honolulu said. Wave heights are expected to be between 6 and 10 feet.

The surf is being fueled by a large northwest swell, forecasters said. Wave heights are expected to gradually subside over the weekend.

Forecasters categorized the surf’s impact as “moderate,” cautioning of strong breaking waves, shore break, and strong longshore and rip currents that can make swimming dangerous. Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by Ocean Safety officials.
