The inaugural Great Gingerbread Competition, presented by Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii and ChoiceMart, will be held Dec. 5 at Daylight Mind Coffee Co. in Kailua-Kona.

During the event, which is reminiscent of a Food Network show, teams will build gingerbread houses to raise money to build a home for a qualified family of five. The gingerbread houses will then be judged and the winning piece will be showcased that same evening at the “Christmas at Kamakahonu Bay” event at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.

Teams of five people can form a “corporate team” for $500 or individuals can be a “master builder” for $100. Each team or individual will receive a gourmet, hand-crafted gingerbread kit with candy decorations and refreshments to enjoy during the build time. Each team can purchase “add-ons” to try and win, and audience members and the “builders” can purchase “slow work down” permits and other creative “permits” and “red flags” to raise more money to help Habitat for Humanity build a home for the Aukai family in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.

The public is invited to attend for$5 where they can cheer the teams on or add a layer of red tape. Information about the event and sign up forms are available on the website at https://www.habitatwesthawaii.org.
