Enterprise zones won’t help residents

Enterprise zones won’t help residents

I am coming straight out and saying the enterprise zones sponsored by Hawaii County are extremely bogus for it makes living for the struggling residents harder and potentially destroys the pristine and heavenly ambience of the beautiful Big Island. In a day and age when we are experiencing record disturbances in the Pacific and climate change, Resolution 283 is suicidal.

Instead of giving corporate America what comes out to be literally a free pass, why not give the lands to the innocent keiki who are the future of the Big Island. Perhaps they can be schooled in agriculture and become prominent farmers in the future.

Mahalo to Councilwomen Valerie Poindexter and Margaret Wille for offering opposition to Resolution 283, which would not only destroy the Big Island but also destroy the lives of the struggling innocent. It is time that continental mentality comes to a stop on the Big Island for it is a rather fragile island.

Put moratorium on fish collecting

With the rising ocean temperatures, much of the coral in Hawaii has already suffered bleaching.

If the state wants to put a moratorium on fish collecting to help the coral rejuvenate, I don’t see why people can’t comply and work with everyone else to bring the coral back to a healthy state. If the coral dies off completely, the lower level creatures and the fish will have nowhere to live and reproduce. This will affect the entire balance.

We all want a healthy environment for our fish and wildlife. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing yellow tangs and Moorish idols swimming freely in the ocean. We want to preserve all of this not only for our children and grandchildren but for all of the visitors to our shores.
