Kona police arrested four drivers, South Hilo officers cited eight drivers and Puna police arrested six drivers. Two drivers were arrested in Ka‘u, South Kohala officers arrested four drivers and North Kohala and Hamakua officers each cited one motorist.
So far this year, there have been 875 DUI arrests compared with 941 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.
There have been 1,241 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,297 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.3 percent.
So far this year, there were 16 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 11 during the same period last year, an increase of 45.5 percent.
To date, six fatalities were related to drugs and four deaths were attributed to a combination of both drugs and alcohol, police said.
