North Kohala Library celebrates fifth anniversary

North Kohala Library celebrates fifth anniversary

The Friends of the North Kohala Library is inviting the Kohala community to the library’s fifth birthday celebration from 3 to 5 p.m. Nov. 2.

Following an opening blessing by Kealoha Sugiyama, Leia Lawrence’s keiki hula halau will perform a selection of dances. Slack key artist John Keawe will provide an afternoon of musical entertainment along with hula performances by his wife, Hope, and grandaughters, Naomi and Shelly. Kohala High School students will share their musical talents.

In the library yard, keiki can enjoy a bouncy castle, games and prizes. Birthday cake and refreshments will be served.

Displays will be set up in the new library and in the historic Bond Memorial Library.

Free Medicare seminar offered

Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union will hold a free educational seminar titled “Medicare 101” from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the John Y. Iwane Credit Union Center training room at the credit union’s Kaloko facility.

The seminar will feature a presentation by Peter Amelotte, health benefits manager at Aloha Insurance Services Inc. Session topics will include how to enroll in Medicare, health plan options and whether penalties exist for not taking Medicare at age 65.

Humane Society hosts annual Howl’ween Dog Walk

The Hawaii Island Humane Society will hold its annual Howl’ween Dog Walk Saturday on the oceanfront Honu Lawn at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. All walkers with or without dogs are invited and are encouraged to raise pledges to support the animals. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the walk gets underway at 8:30.

The event will include a costume contest for dogs, giveaways and stand-up paddle rides for pups.

Event proceeds help offset costs of animal supplies and low-cost spay and neuter services to help eliminate pet overpopulation on Hawaii Island. Pledges can be made at firstgiving.com/hihs/howlween-dog-walk-2015.

Walkers who earn a minimum of $25 in pledges will receive a gift. Those who earn $50 in pledges will receive a Howl’ween Dog Walk T-shirt.

Pledge forms are also available at Hawaii Island Humane Society’s Kona shelter and from many island veterinarians.

Annual Charity Trees at Mauna Lani announced

Mauna Lani Bay Hotel &Bungalows is inviting area organizations and charities to participate in the 22nd annual Charity Trees at Mauna Lani, planned for the holiday season. The event helps to raise awareness and funds for local nonprofit organizations.

Nov. 27 is the entry deadline. The charity trees will be displayed in Mauna Lani Bay’s lobby from Dec. 4 through the holiday season. Community members, resort guests and employees are invited to view the entries and vote for their favorite tree for a $1 donation per vote.

The winners will be announced Dec. 22 and Mauna Lani Bay will award cash prizes to the organizations whose trees receive the highest number of votes: $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place. Donations will be split among all participating organizations excluding the three winners. All for-profit organizations must designate a charity to receive their donation.

Dinner celebrates birthday of Marine Corps

The public is invited to celebrate the 240th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps on Nov. 7 at Mai Grille (formerly Kings’ Grille) at the Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf Course clubhouse. Social hour with a no-host bar will be at 5 p.m. and dinner will begin at 6.

The menu includes either sauted mahi mahi, broccoli and rice, or prime rib, baked potato and broccoli, or herb roasted chicken, rice or baked potao and broccoli.
