HONOLULU (AP) — A Maui man has been charged with attempted murder after police say he injured an officer and tried to run over another officer while trying to avoid arrest.

The incident began Friday when police received a report of a Toyota Tundra swerving on the road in Wailuku, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported (https://bit.ly/1NjNa7D).

Police located the suspected vehicle unattended in a drug store parking lot, and an officer positioned his vehicle behind the truck.

Police say two men entered the truck and the driver reversed into the officer’s vehicle. The driver allegedly accelerated toward another officer, who was able to escape getting hit.

The officer who was hit suffered injuries that were not life threatening.

The incident caused three schools in the area to be placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Authorities later determined that the truck was stolen, along with a moped that fell from the vehicle during a pursuit of the suspects.

The driver was located and arrested on several charges, including attempted murder, criminal property damage and reckless driving. The second suspect has not yet been arrested.
