Heavy rain over areas of the Big Island has prompted National Weather Service forecasters to extend a flood advisory until 5:30 p.m. Friday.
At 4:10 p.m., satellite and radar data indicated that thunderstorms and heavy showers continue to impact both leeward and windward areas of the Big Island. In windward areas, rain was estimated to be falling at 1 to 2 inches per hour. Thunderstorms were also developing over the leeward slopes, near Keahole Point.
Forecasters said the flood advisory covers most of the Big Island, except for the area around south point. The heaviest rainfall was reported over the Kona slopes and between Hilo and Honokaa.
The public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions.
