The Kailua Village Artists will hold an artists reception mosaic artist and acrylic painter, Kathleen Jaeger, potter, Linda Savell and photographer, Whitney Steele. The public is invited to attend the event from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the gallery located in Kona Marketplace.
Jaeger works her mosaic art pieces by using primarily stained glass as her tesserae. Among her newest creations of mosaic are the “Bird of Paradise Mosaic Table” and a “Honu Clock.” Jaeger also paints in acrylics, and the differences in these two media enable her to have a more structured or spontaneous approach determined on the image she envisions. Jaeger holds a master’s in special education for emotionally disturbed children and youth from the University of Kansas and she is an art therapist registered with the American Art Therapy Association.
Savell has devoted more than a half century to her work as a potter. Her pottery creations include elegant vessels, functional ware, and a series of fish incorporating the harmony of form, splendid patterns and colors that are finished in different types of glazes. Savell’s latest creations are elegant vessels, some of them glazed in Raku, an ancient Japanese firing process creating dramatic metallic sheens, and in colorful glazed finishes on high-fired stoneware. Savell has a master’s in education and ceramic technology. She crafts jewelry pieces made with dichroic glass and some incorporate handmade clay pieces and metals as well.
Steele’s photography reflects her close bond to nature. She started taking photography classes in high school, and continued with classes during college. Steele has a bachelor’s in landscape architecture from Washington State University. She uses a modest DSRL camera and a complement of lenses to capture her images and she chooses to keep her images as she sees them through the lens.
