Gerald Lucena and Margaret Shields will offer a family altar-making workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Donkey Mill Art Center in Holualoa.
Altars are a big part of Dia de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead celebration. In this workshop, participants will create colorful altars to honor deceased loved ones using materials like cardboard, papier mache and others objects. Participants are asked to bring a small box (no larger than 1 cubic foot) to represent the main form of the alter (wooden shadow boxes will work, as well) and a variety of mixed-media accouterments including photographs will be used to decorate the surfaces of the altar. Small figures, paper marigolds and skulls will also be made to complete the narrative aspects of the altar.
Finished altars may be part of a community display during Donkey Mill Art Centers’s celebration of life slated Nov. 1 at Daylight Mind Coffee Co. in Kailua-Kona.
Cost is $45 for parent and child; or $25 per person. The cost includes supplies. For more information, or to register, call 322-3362.
