Over 500 athletes took part in the PATH 5K and 10K Walk-Run Saturday morning. Runners started at Hale Halawai Park and ran up and down Alii Drive, finishing by the ocean at Hale Halawai.
Frederic Funk was the first runner to cross the finish line, completing the 5K in a time of 17 minutes and 16 seconds. He was followed by Cody Ranfranz (17:50) and Thomas Gollodts (18:54). The race was dominated by youth, with the top three finishers all competing in the 13-19 age division. Manghelen Albright was the first female to cross the finish line. She also competed in the 13-19 division, completing the course in a time of 19:06.
In the 10K, Chad Pennington blew the field away, finishing over a minute faster than the second place runner in a time of 34:41. He competed out of the 35-49 age division. Daniel Wienbreier (35-39, 35:54) finished second and Alain Friedrich (30-34, 36:25) rounded out the top three.
Christine Schleifer was the first female to cross the finish line in the 10K, placing fourth overall in a time of 37:29.
PATH – Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawaii – is a non-profit bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organization headquartered in Kailua-Kona.
The organization was founded in 1986 with a mission to safely connect the people and places on Hawaii Island with pathways and bikeways.
This is the 29th year that the event has kicked off IRONMAN week. Proceeds from the race will help support the PATH Bike and Safety Education program, which has educated more than 1,000 students and adults on bike safety this year.
