An 18-year-old man is dead after being pulled downstream in the Wailuku River near Piihonua Bridge on Wednesday afternoon.
Kevin Jay Ishikawa, 18, Hilo, was swimming with three friends near bridge. When they went to cross the river, he was pulled downstream. His friends later told rescue personnel he was underwater for three to five minutes.
At 3:34 p.m. first responders were alerted to the situation and left their facility within two minutes.
The friends administered CPR until rescue personnel arrived at 3:44 p.m. Fire personnel extricated Ishikawa to the ambulance, where he was treated before being taken to the Hilo Hospital ER in critical condition.
He was pronounced dead at 4:24 p.m., according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Police have begun a cornoner’s inquest and ordered and autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
