Volunteers across the state headed to the beach on Saturday for the first ever Bleachapalooza, a grassroots effort to monitor bleached coral by utilizing trained snorkel and dive volunteers.
The Eyes of the Reef Network provides training, though not mandatory, teaches how to identify coral bleaching in their area and how to report the findings. They encourage ocean enthusiasts to report changes they have seen occur in their favorite snorkel/dive spots. These findings will help the agencies tasked with coral reef monitoring get a more comprehensive look at the unprecedented bleaching on Hawaii reefs.
