The search by the Hawaii Fire Department for a fisherman swept into the ocean off the Kaloli Point in Puna continued Tuesday and is scheduled to continue Wednesday.
The man was last seen at 2:30 p.m. Sunday about 50 yards offshore of the Puna locat
Ground teams searched the shoreline, as did Rescue Boat Two. The boat also provided support for SCUBA dives north and south of the last seen position. Chopper One performed an aerial search four miles north and south of the last seen position and up to a half mile off shore.
The search was once again suspended because of high surf and nightfall on Monday.
The Coast Guard suspended its part of the search Sunday.
Although sea searches normally go three days, the fire department is opting to continue for at least one day, said Gerald Koseki, HFD battalion chief of special operations.
Surf levels had dropped to the 3 to 5 feet range, he said, making searches on Tuesday more effective.
