Niala weakened to a remnant low Monday as the former tropical storm continued its west-southwest track away from the Big Island.
At the time it was downgraded, the weather system was located 315 miles southwest of South Point, forecasters with the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu reported. An area of thunderstorms persisted around Niala Tuesday afternoon more than 500 miles south of Honolulu, however, a hostile shear environment is expected to inhibit redevelopment of the storm for the next 48 hours.
Elsewhere in the Central Pacific, which is where Hawaii is located, no tropical cyclones are expected to develop through Thursday afternoon.
In the Eastern Pacific, National Hurricane Center forecasters continue to monitor Tropical Storm Marty, which was located 95 miles west-southwest of Acapulco, Mexico, as of Tuesday evening. Marty was circulating 50 mph winds and nearly stationary. On its current forecast track, the center of Marty is expected to be near but just offshore of the southwestern coast of Mexico through Wednesday, forecasters said.
A tropical storm warning remains posted for areas of the Mexico coast between Acapulco and Lazaro Cardenas; a tropical storm watch is in effect for areas west of Lazaro Cardenas to Punta San Telmo.
Weakening is expected to continue as Marty encounters cooler sea surface temperatures and moderate shear. Forecasters expect it to be downgraded to a depression Wednesday.
Forecasters are also watching an area of low pressure expected to develop several hundreds miles south-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. A tropical depression is expected to form later this week.
Elsewhere in the Eastern Pacific, tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next five days.
