Kailua-Kona based Halau Hula Na Pua Ui O Hawaii won first place in the Wahine Division of the 33rd annual 2015 Kupuna Hula Festival. Under the direction of kumu hula Etua Lopes, the dancers stamped their own fabric in traditional style, learned the pai (drumming) of the ipu (gourd), and made their own adornments while studying the hula for the “Kaloaloa.” Kona brought home first place in the international hula festival.
