Hawaii Women’s Legal Foundation is accepting applications for its 2015 grant requests from organizations and projects that help to improve the legal status and welfare of women and children in Hawaii. The foundation considers grant applications twice a year — in April and October. The deadline for receipt of grant applications for consideration this cycle is Friday.

Elderly Recreation announces classes
Elderly Recreation Services classes are beginning soon. Classes run in 10-week sessions beginning Monday through Dec. 4, excluding holidays and are open to anyone 55 years and older. Most registration fees are $10 per session and can be paid in advance at the West Hawaii Civic Center or to the instructor on the first day of class. Call for alternate location of Hale Halawai classes because of Ironman.
West Hawaii classes available this session are as follows:
— Line dancing: 10:15 a.m. Tuesdays, Waikoloa Community Church; 10 a.m. Thursdays, Hale Halawai beginning Oct. 13; beginner class, 9 a.m. Fridays, Yano Hall; intermediate class, 9 a.m. Mondays, Yano Hall.
— Aquatic aerobic/ swim classes at Kona Community Pool: Deep water aerobics, 9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; beginner adult swim lessons, 10:45 a.m. Thursdays; intermediate adult swim lessons, 9:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
— Senior fitness classes: 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Hale Halawai; 8:30 a.m. Thursdays, Yano Hall.
— Senior yoga, 8:30 a.m. Mondays or Fridays, Hale Halawai; 8:30 a.m. Wednesdays,West Hawaii Civic Center gazebo; chair yoga, 10 a.m. Mondays, Hale Halawai. Cost is $5 per class.
— Beginner tai chi class: 9 a.m. Wednesdays, Yano Hall (lower hall); 9 a.m. Fridays, Hale Halawai; 9 a.m. Tuesdays, West Hawaii Civic Center gazebo.
— Meditation: 8:30 a.m. Mondays, St. Benedict’s Church (Painted Church). The session will run Monday through Oct. 26 and costs $5.
— Chair qigong, 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays, St. Benedict’s Church (Painted Church). Class session will run Tuesday through Oct. 27 and costs $5.
— Low-impact zumba, 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays, West Hawaii Civic Center gazebo.
— Zumba toning, 5:30 p.m. Thursdays, West Hawaii Civic Center gazebo.
— Beginner ukulele, 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Hale Halawai.

Orchid Society meeting Friday
The Kona Orchid Society meets Friday at Makua Lani Christian Academy, 74-4966 Kealakaa St. in Kailua-Kona. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and guests are asked to arrive by 6 p.m. Bring a pupu to share for the potluck dinner.
The speaker will be Larry Keukes, president of the Hilo Orchid Society. He will talk about photographing orchids, whether using a simple camera, an SLR, or a cellphone.
There will be a display of members’ orchids and a drawing for orchids.
