Elderly Recreation announces classes
Elderly Recreation Services classes are beginning soon. Classes run in 10-week sessions beginning Monday through Dec. 4, excluding holidays and are open to anyone 55 years and older. Most registration fees are $10 per session and can be paid in advance at the West Hawaii Civic Center or to the instructor on the first day of class. Call for alternate location of Hale Halawai classes because of Ironman.
West Hawaii classes available this session are as follows:
— Line dancing: 10:15 a.m. Tuesdays, Waikoloa Community Church; 10 a.m. Thursdays, Hale Halawai beginning Oct. 13; beginner class, 9 a.m. Fridays, Yano Hall; intermediate class, 9 a.m. Mondays, Yano Hall.
— Aquatic aerobic/ swim classes at Kona Community Pool: Deep water aerobics, 9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; beginner adult swim lessons, 10: 45 a.m. Thursdays; intermediate adult swim lessons, 9:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
— Senior fitness classes: 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Hale Halawai; 8:30 a.m. Thursdays, Yano Hall.
— Senior yoga, 8:30 a.m. Mondays or Fridays, Hale Halawai; 8:30 a.m. Wednesdays,West Hawaii Civic Center gazebo; chair yoga, 10 a.m. Mondays, Hale Halawai. Cost is $5 per class.
— Beginner tai chi class: 9 a.m. Wednesdays, Yano Hall (lower hall); 9 a.m. Fridays, Hale Halawai; 9 a.m. Tuesdays, West Hawaii Civic Center gazebo.
— Meditation: 8:30 a.m. Mondays, St. Benedict’s Church (Painted Church),. Class session will run Monday through Oct. 26 and costs $5.
— Chair qigong, 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays, St. Benedict’s Church (Painted Church). Class session will run Tuesday through Oct. 27 and costs $5.
— Low-impact zumba, 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays, West Hawaii Civic Center gazebo.
— Zumba toning, 5:30 p.m. Thursdays, West Hawaii Civic Center gazebo.
— Beginner ukulele,9:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Hale Halawai.

Presentation on college classes slated
The Kailua-Kona Public Library will host a presentation from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, that focuses on higher education opportunities available in West Hawaii.
Carrie Kuwada Phipps, an education specialist at Hawaii Community College – Palamanui and the University Center at Palamanui, will present information on higher education opportunities, reasons for choosing Palamanui, new initiatives currently in the works, and tips on navigating the Hawaii Community College website.
In addition to the presentation, there will be printed information available on the new campus, learning tools to prepare students for the Compass Testing, and information on the programs offered.

Rotary clubs announce speakers

Noelani Kalipi, executive director of the Kohala Institute at Iole, speaks during the Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise meeting from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. Wednesday at Humpy’s second floor. She will talk about the Hawaii Island Energy Cooperative, a nonprofit cooperative association formed by community and business leaders on Hawaii Island to explore the potential merits of a community-based, cooperative ownership structure for electric utility service on the Big Island. On Thursday, the Rotary Club of Kona meeting has been relocated because of the Ironman Triathlon. Participants will meet from noon to 1 p.m. at the West Hawaii Explorations Academy. Keiki story time is Wednesday
Kona Stories bookstore, assisted by the American Association of University Women, is hosting a story time best suited for children ages 3 to 7 years Wednesday, Sept. 30, in the courtyard of Keauhou Shopping Center.
The event will feature Drew Daywalt’s book, “The Day the Crayons Quit.” Snack and crafts are also provided. Daywalt’s newest book, “The Day the Crayons Came Home,” just arrived at the bookstore.
There is a $5 participation fee to cover crafts and snack. Space is limited to 24 children and reservations are required. Call 324-0350. Check-in is 10 minutes early at Kona Stories Book Store.
Miss Big Island pageant seeks contestants
Aloha Productions announces the Miss Big Island Scholarship Pageant scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 21 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Grand Ballroom. Miss Big Island 2016 will receive a wealth of high-impact life experiences, opportunities, awards, gifts and the honor of representing the Big Island at the Miss Hawaii Scholarship Pageant. If chosen as Miss Hawaii, she will represent the state in the world renowned Miss America Scholarship Pageant.
To compete, contestants must be: between the ages of 17 and 24; a United States citizen; a resident of Hawaii and reside on Hawaii Island; meet character criteria as set forth by the Miss America Organization; in reasonably good health to meet the job requirements; and able to meet the time commitment and job responsibilities as set forth by the Miss Big Island Scholarship Program.

The Kailua-Kona Seniors meets at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai. The guest speaker will be Jan from Da Bead Shop. She will provide a demonstration of her craft. The nominating committee will be announced at this time.

Ducosin promoted at credit union
Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union has promoted Robin Ducosin to human resources manager. Ducosin will be responsible for the Human Resources and Training Departments and will oversee the credit union’s performance management, employee relations and service excellence.
Ducosin brings more than 17 years of experience in human resources to the financial institution with previous human resource positions she’s held at Target, Clark County of Nevada and Realty Management.
Ducosin received an associates of arts degree in interior design from the Design Institute of Nevada. She is also active in the community through her involvement with Run for Hope, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and the Hawaii Food Basket.
Shakespeare fans meeting Wednesday
Read Aloud Shakespeare is a group that meets in Kona once a month to read The Bard’s plays. Members are currently reading “The Merchant of Venice.” Shakespeare fans are invited to bring a copy of the play and join the group at its next meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, in Keauhou. No previous Shakespeare or acting ability required.
