Now in its third year, SKEA’s Magic Camp emphasizes fun in learning how to make things appear, switch places, levitate, and vanish. The techniques will be taught in groups and one-on-one.
The magic will be taught by Kona’s premier practitioners in the field Bruce and Jennifer Meyers and Barry Gitelson, also known as The Great Barusky. The Meyers have won international awards for their performances and dedication to teaching the art of magic to young people. Gitelson, a founding member of the Big Island Magic Club, has been delighting audiences in Kona for many years. He is a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Society for American Magicians, as well as a local favorite at the annual Magic Spectacular.
Just after magic, keiki can slide right into clay. Professional potter and educator Alysia Samaru will teach the pottery workshop. Samaru is a member of the Kona Potters Guild, located in the downstairs studio at SKEA. She has taught pottery at the SKEA art camps for many years, as well as in schools through SKEA’s Art of Learning program.
Magic camp will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 5 to 9 at SKEA, which is located in Honaunau. Space is limited to 20 students. Tuition is $75 for the week, plus the cost of a SKEA family membership, which is $35.
Pottery camp will be held Oct. 5 to 8 from 2:15 to 4:15 p.m. at SKEA. Space is also limited to 20 students. Tuition is $50 for the four-day workshop, which includes all supplies and firings, plus the cost of a SKEA family membership.
Scholarships, provided by Patel’s Spirit Station in Honaunau, and an anonymous donor, are available. Register by Sept. 28 for a $10 discount.
