A garage was destroyed by a fire that began at 10:58 p.m. Tuesday in Kalaoa, but firefighters protected the nearby house from damage, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.

The 900-square-foot building was located at 72-4126 Awalua Place, one of the short roads off Makalei Drive.

When firefighters arrived at 11:05 p.m., they found that the garage was “100 percent involved with partial roof collapse above the possible point of origin,” according to a press release.

There were no vehicles inside, the release said, and firefighters established two attack lines to protect the house.

The loss was valued at $100,000. Firefighters reported their efforts saved $600,000 in property.

In all, 16 firefighters and eight vehicles responded. The fire remains under investigation.
