HONOLULU (AP) — The state’s only public mental health hospital is a top priority for the Department of Health, which says it is planning a major expansion to increase capacity.
KITV-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1gMHg3a ) that the Hawaii State Hospital in Kaneohe is planning a $160 million project that will allow the hospital to treat more than 250 patients.
The plan is to demolish the outdated Goddard building and replace it with a new 3-story hospital with 144 beds.
The hospital has been criticized for overcrowding and violence, which has pushed the need for a new facility to the top of the state’s list for improvements.
Officials say funding for the expansion will come from government bonds or private funds.
