Kona Elks Lodge will celebrate Oktoberfest beginning at 4:45 p.m. Saturday. Walter Bobb’s sauerbraten, German potato salad, rosti, vegetables, homemade pretzels and apple surprise will be served. Music will be by Bill Nordstrom’s Kona Angels with a selection of classic R&R/oldies from the 1950s and ’60s, some German party songs and songs of the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s.

Meditation retreat scheduled Sunday
Gavin Harrison will conduct a one-day silent meditation retreat from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Honokaa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple Social Hall, 45-5016 Lehua St, Honokaa. The theme, “Mindfulness: The Everyday Path of Peace, Health and Well-being,” will be explored. The retreat is nondenominational and open to all. Experienced and beginning meditators welcome. Meditation guidance is offered. Bring a meditation cushion. Chairs are available.

AARP driver
class scheduled
Kona Palisades Association is sponsoring an AARP “Smart Driver” class at 1 p.m. Monday at the Palisades Recreation Center on lower Kaiminani Drive. The new “Smart Driver” Class is the updated version of the driver safety class encompassing many new techniques to help the older driver “stay safe.”
This class is geared toward the older driver. It does not include driving or written tests, only quizzes. It covers subjects that may affect drivers as they age, such as hearing, eyesight, reflexes, safety rules, road rage, rules of the road, problems at intersections, and drinking and driving.

SBA recognizes
start-up accelerators
The U.S. Small Business Administration has recognized three Hawaii start-up accelerators from three islands as among the nation’s most innovative. Each receives a $50,000 cash prize as winners of the second annual Growth Accelerator Fund Competition.
The local winners include Hawaii Island’s GVS Transmedia Accelerator, the University of Hawaii’s Honolulu-based XLR8UH and the Maui Food Innovation Center’s Accelerator Program. All of the programs are supported with state funds and work closely with the private sector to launch promising businesses in Hawaii.
Amateur radio group meeting Sunday
The Kona Amateur Radio Society meets from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority. All members, friends and those interested in amateur (HAM) radio are invited. A potluck picnic theme will be Mediterranean in celebration of the end of Ramadan. Bring a dish to share.
