Law enforcement officers are sweeping part of the island for marijuana growing operations and checking on medical marijuana permits.

Officers are checking areas where marijuana plants have been previously found, said Toni Schwartz of the Department of Public Safety.

Officers are also ensuring residents have the proper number of marijuana plants in their possession, she said. Under state law, people can have seven plants and 4 ounces of usable marijuana at any time.

The Department of Natural Resources is also performing a similar sweep.

The two are not performing the search together, police said.

However, the officers met at the conference room at the Kealakehe Police Station before they sallied out Monday morning.

All were wearing casual clothes emblazoned with “Police.” Many were driving personal or state pickup trucks as they headed out to their various locations.

Several got into their vehicles with body armor on before heading to their various sites.

Police are not releasing when the operation will be over.
