A Japanese hiker was rescued after he became lost on Mauna Loa Sunday night.
The 42-year-old man was found on the Mauna Loa Observatory trail, about 1.5 miles above the observatory, according to the Hawaii Fire Department. He was found about 8:15 p.m. by a searcher from the Pohakuloa Training Area, driving a Polaris ATV.
Fire officials said the man had been hiking all day, and encountered heavy rain, strong winds and low temperatures in the low 50s. When he was found he was suffering from exhaustion and hypothermia.
He was taken to the Hilo Medical Center for treatment.
