HONOLULU (AP) — Firefighters have rescued seven Brigham Young University-Hawaii students who spent the night stuck in the Koolau Mountain Range above Kaaawa.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports (https://bit.ly/1NGuY9q ) that the students, ages 18 to 20, went hiking around noon Saturday, beginning in Pearl City. They became stuck above Crouching Lion Inn and called for help Saturday night.
Honolulu Fire Department Capt. James Todd says they were unable to rescue the students Saturday night because it was dark. They asked the three women and four men to stay in place until daylight.
The seven hikers were rescued by helicopter Sunday morning. No one was hurt.
Todd says the group was trying to hike to the windward side after watching a video online that showed the trail exiting on the other side of the mountain range.
