A man died in a single-car crash Thursday afternoon on Waikoloa Road, which police say may have been related to a medication condition.

Robert J. Cooley, 49, of Hilo, was headed east on Waikoloa Road when he ran off the road near mile marker 2, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Officers responding to the 2:40 p.m. call, found the 2004 Nissan Altima he was driving ran off the right side of the road and rolled on to a small rock embankment, where the car came to rest.

Cooley was taken to North Hawai’i Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:45 p.m.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Police are waiting for autopsy results before counting Cooley’s death toward the official traffic fatality count.

Anyone with information about the crash should call Officer Christopher Kapua-Allison at 326-4646, ext. 229.
