Emergency personnel are searching for a woman who went missing while swimming at Boiling Pots Monday evening in Hilo.

The 62-year-old woman and a man were swimming in the upper pond at Boiling Pots, fire officials said. The two began to be pulled downstream by a fast-moving current, and only the man made it to the river bank safely.

Firefighters were notified at 5:50 p.m. and were on scene by 5:57 p.m.

The woman was “pulled into an area of rough water and later could not be located,” officials said. A ground and aerial search of the river banks did not find her.

Fire rescue personnel could not conduct a search of the river itself because of the rough water conditions, officials said.

The search was suspended at sunset and scheduled to begin again Tuesday morning.
