Four people made off with bikinis, blouses, rash guards and other surf brand attire early Tuesday during a burglary at Oshima’s Surf and Skate in Kainaliu.
Shortly before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, a person at a nearby business called the Hawaii Police Department to report hearing suspicious sounds coming from the shop located on the makai side of Mamalahoa Highway, just south of Aloha Theatre. The person added that they had seen a dark Toyota Tacoma pickup drive away, headed north on the highway, toward Kailua-Kona.
Responding officers found evidence of a forcible break-in at the store. A review of surveillance video showed four persons grabbing clothing before exiting the store. Among the items snatched during the burglary were bikinis, blouses, rash guards and “other surf brand attire,” police said.
It is unknown the value or number of items taken during the burglary, and attempts to reach Area II Criminal Investigations Section Lt. Gerald Wike were unsuccessful as of press time Friday.
Oshima’s Surf and Skate in Kainaliu carries an array of brands including Quiksilver, Hurley, O’Neil, and Rusty, as well as local brands like Defend Hawaii and Moku Nui, among others. A Hurley brand bikini ranges retails online from $68 to $102 for both pieces while a pair of board shorts by Quiksilver can run $45 to more than $100, depending on style, according to online outlets.
In the days since the incident, business has returned to normal, a manager reached Friday told West Hawaii Today. The woman, who declined to provide her name, said police contacted her Tuesday to tell her about the crime that occurred at the longtime Kainaliu store.
“I just hope they get them,” she said.
