Volcano Art Center will show the film, “Waste Land,” a tale of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit, Thursday at 7 p.m.
Filmed over a three-year period, “Waste Land” follows the prominent artist, Vik Muniz from his current base in New York to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump outside of Rio de Janeiro. Together with an eclectic band of “catadores” who live at the dump and pick out recyclables, they recreate enormous photographs of themselves out of garbage, revealing both their dignity and despair as they dare to re-imagine their lives as the process unfolds.
A panel discussion will follow the film, with special guest host Volcano resident and “Trash Show” impresario Ira Ono, along with Recycle Hawaii’s Executive Director Paul Buklarewicz. This presentation is free, however donations always welcome.
The screening is part of a once-a-month Thursday evening series at the Volcano Art Center focusing on art, Hawaiian culture and the environment. The Volcano Art Center’s Niualani Campus is located at 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village.
Volcano Art Center is a nonprofit educational organization created in 1974 to promote, develop, and perpetuate the artistic and cultural heritage of Hawaii’s people and environment through activities in the visual, literary, and performing arts. For more information, visit www.volcanoartcenter.org.
