The West Hawaii Dance Theatre and Academy is offering a series of tap dance lessons with Kathleen Sime-Schulz and Paule Hagino starting Saturday.

The lessons are held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the West Hawaii Dance Theatre and Academy located off Alapa Street in the Old Industrial Area of Kona. Classes are slated Sept. 12, 19, 26 and Oct. 3.

Sime-Schulz has been teaching and choreographing on Maui for more than 32 years and has served as the dance director and head costumer for the Maui Academy of Performing Arts for the past 25 years. Sime-Schulz studied modern dance with Martha Graham in New York, jazz with Roland Dupree in Los Angeles and ballet with Nico Cerese in Los Angeles. She has taught dance and performed nationwide, including many years on stage in Las Vegas.

Hagino is a former founding member of Rhapsody In Taps, a rhythm tap dance company based in California. Currently residing in Honolulu, she teaches a small group of rhythm tap enthusiasts. Her teaching feeds her interest in rhythm and movement. She also gets inspiration through being a student of taiko and participates in community classes through Taiko Center of the Pacific.

Cost is $100 in advance, $30 on the day. To register, call 329-8876.

West Hawaii Dance Theatre and Academy is a nonprofit educational organization and is sponsored by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Hawaii Community Foundation, Atherton Family, Vance Wall Foundation and local businesses and families.
