Upcoming Hawaii Cycling Club events
The Hawaii Cycling Club has scheduled two bicycle training time trials combined with a Saturday ride option in September.
On Sept. 12 at 8 a.m. is the Mauna Kea — a six mile time trial with an elevation gain of 2500-ft on the Mauna Kea Access Road. Cyclists choosing the non-time trial Saturday Ride option should start between 7- 7:30 a.m.
The fourth annual “Out n Back” Training Time Trial and Saturday Ride takes place at 7 a.m. on Sept. 19. The course is 19.5 miles. The start is at Kaiminani Dr., and Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. Competitors will ride North 13.5 miles to mile marker 80, make a U-turn and return to the finish line at mile-marker 86.
The Saturday Ride non-time trial bicyclists will start shortly after the last time trial competitor.
Both events are free to HCC annual members. Non-members will pay a $10 one day membership fee. The annual membership fee is $20.

5th Bieni 5K Fun Run and Dog Walk at HPA
Runners, walkers, friendly canines, and families are invited to participate in the Fifth Bieni 5K Fun Run and Dog Walk beginning at 9 a.m. on Sept. 20 at the Hawaii Preparatory Academy cross-country course. The course — located at the school’s Upper Campus — is a challenging, but fun and that includes hills, flats, grass and pavement.
Participants who preregister online by Sept. 8 will receive a race shirt and goodie bag. To register, visit: flpregister.com/154. Entry fees are $25 for participants 11 and older and $35 for those 11 and older with dogs.
This fun community event honors Bieni Kohler-Johnson, an HPA alumna who passed away in 2009 after a valiant battle against breast cancer. All net proceeds from the event fund the annual Bieni Kohler-Johnson ’83 Scholarship at HPA, which recognizes young women who are gifted in athletics, academics, or the arts.
The top fundraiser will receive the grand prize of a two-night stay at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. The runner-up fundraiser will receive a round of golf for four at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Fundraisers do not need to be present to win. Medals will be awarded to the top two overall male and female finishers and to the top three male and female finishers in each age division.

BIAC 45th annual Labor Day Drags
The Big Island Auto Club held its 45th annual Labor Day Drags at the Hilo Drag Strip on Saturday and Sunday.
Although a full racing program was run on Saturday, the Sunday event schedule was cut short by afternoon rains. Here are the results:
Saturday Motorcycle Bracket Race winner: Matt Hiraga (Honolulu) on a Suzuki motorcycle (10.05 sec/127 mph). Runner up: Richard Graellos (Ewa Beach, Oahu) on a Suzuki motorcycle (9.78 sec/139 mph). Hiraga won the race on a “hole shot.”
Saturday Bracket 1 Race winner: Kevin Benevides (Hilo) in a roadster (15.01 sec/64 mph). Runner up: David Francis (Paauilo) in a Camaro (broke out of bracket and red-lighted with a time of 8.79 sec/155 mph.
Saturday Bracket 2 Race winner: John Hunter (Pahoa) in a AMX (11.50sec/110 mph). Runner up: Russell Medeiros (Ocean View) in a S-10 pickup truck (11.86 sec/114 mph).
Sunday events, including the Junior Dragster program, the open wheel competition, and the “Door Slammer”event, were stopped because of rain in the late afternoon. Prize money was distributed equally to those still in competition.
Next Race: The 2016 Drag Racing season will depend on when a major ADA upgrade and facility improvements are completed at the Hilo Drag Strip. Those improvements will begin sometime in October.
