Kona Vet Center plans open house

Kona Vet Center will host an open house from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at 73-4976 Kamanu St., Suite 207.

The center will participate in the National Day of Service and Remembrance by helping to ensure all post-9/11 combat veterans and their families living on the west side of Hawaii Island know about their local vet center and the services offered. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the center, meet the staff, learn about resources for veterans and enroll in Vet Center services.

Vet Center services are earned through military service in a combat zone or area of hostility and are provided at no cost to veterans or their families. They are staffed by teams which may include social workers, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, master’s-level counselors and outreach specialists.

Vet Centers also conduct community outreach and offer counseling on employment, family issues and education to combat veterans and family members. Staff also offer bereavement counseling for families and counseling for veterans who experienced sexual trauma while on active duty.

The Kona Vet Center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Veterans and families are welcome to walk-in during these hours.

Appointments can be made by calling 329-0574. More information about Vet Centers can be found at vetcenter.va.gov.

Chevron raising money for school projects

Chevron U.S.A. Inc. has launched its Fuel Your School program, an innovative collaboration with donorschoose.org in all counties in Hawaii. Building on the 22,189 local students who benefited last year, Fuel Your School is now in its third year in Hawaii, and will generate up to $350,000 this fall, which will help fund classroom supplies and materials, including those focused on science, technology, engineering and math and hands-on activities to help connect real world experiences to classroom learning.

Public school teachers are invited to post eligible classroom projects at donorschoose.org. Then, from Oct. 1 through 31, the Fuel Your School program will donate $1, up to a total of $350,000, to help fund eligible classroom projects when consumers purchase eight or more gallons of fuel at participating Chevron stations.

Last year, Chevron’s Fuel Your School program helped fund 247 eligible classroom projects for public schools in Hawaii.

For a list of participating communities in the 2015 Fuel Your School program and to track local projects in need of funding, visit fuelyourschool.com. In addition to funds generated through the Fuel Your School program, anyone, including consumers and Chevron employees, may also independently browse and fund inspiring classroom projects on donorschoose.org by making separate, individual donations.
