High surf fueled by Jimena and Ignacio is forecast to continue impacting the Big Island’s shores into early next week.
A high surf warning for east-facing shores and a high surf advisory for south-facing shores remains in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday.
Forecasters called for 12- to 18-foot waves along east-facing shores and 6-foot waves along south-facing shores.
Forecasters categorized the surf’s impact as “very high” warning of ocean water surging and sweeping across beaches, coastal benches and lava flows creating the potential for impacts to coast properties and infrastructure. Powerful longshore and rip currents will also be present at most beaches. Large breaking waves and strong currents may also impact harbor entrances and channels.
Forecasters also cautioned the inexperienced swimmers to stay out of the water and away from beaches and adjacent beachfront areas because of the threat of large breaking surf.
