The Hawaii County Department of Water Supply is working to repair Halekii deep well after it failed on Monday. The breakdown has customers in South Kona on water conservation.
Though back up wells are now online, customers in the upper elevations of Kainaliu may experience low to no water pressure, according to the DWS. The estimated timeline for repair is 2 to 3 months. A water spigot for access to drinking water is now available on Mamalahoa Highway in South Kona across the street from Aloha Theater fronting the former Harold’s 76 Gas Station.
Water conservation calls for a voluntary 10 percent reduction in water use until repairs are complete. DWS offered the following ways to conserve water to reach the 10 percent goal:
· Wash only full loads of laundry or dishes at a time
· Check faucets and pipes for leaks
· Keep a container of drinking water in the refrigerator
· Do not let water run when you wash, shave, or brush your teeth
· Reduce showering times
· Use water-saving devices
· Use a broom instead of a water hose for cleaning
· Irrigate at night and with a bucket for small jobs
· Use drinking water wisely
All agricultural users: Keep water usage to a minimum. Irrigate only at night and during non-peak hours, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Minimize water use for dust control.
