Queen Liliuokalani Outrigger Canoe Races get started
The 2015 Queen Liliuokalani Long Distance Outrigger Canoe Races welcomes more than 2,500 outrigger canoe paddlers this week for its signature 18-mile long distance race, the world’s largest long distance outrigger canoe race.
Kai Opua Canoe Club, one of Hawaii’s oldest outrigger canoe clubs, will host crews from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, Tahiti, United Kingdom and an estimated 75 crews from the US. Hawaii will be well represented with multiple crews and more than sixty Big Island crews are also expected on the starting line.
Other official Queen Liliuokalani Canoe Race events unfold throughout the holiday weekend including Historic Kailua Village Cultural Walk, Paddling Talk Story, Native Artist Fair, Torchlight Parade, Stand-up Paddleboard Race, Alii Challenge and new this year, Hulakai OC4 (4 person canoes) Sprint Relay Race.
Buccaneers waive 10, including draft pick Iosefa
Seventh-round draft pick Joey Iosefa was among 10 players released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first wave of cuts.
The rookie fullback out of Hawaii was waived Sunday, when the roster was trimmed to 80 players. NFL teams face a deadline Tuesday to get down to the league-mandated limit of 75 players for the final preseason game.

Upcoming Hawaii Cycling Club events
The Hawaii Cycling Club has scheduled two bicycle training time trials combined with a Saturday ride option in September.
On Sept. 12 at 8 a.m. is the Mauna Kea — a six mile time trial with an elevation gain of 2500-ft on the Mauna Kea Access Road. Cyclists choosing the non-time trial Saturday Ride option should start between 7- 7:30 a.m.
The fourth annual “Out n Back” Training Time Trial and Saturday Ride takes place at 7 a.m. on Sept. 19. The course is 19.5 miles. The start is at Kaiminani Dr., and Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. Competitors will ride North 13.5 miles to mile marker 80, make a U-turn and return to the finish line at mile-marker 86.
The Saturday Ride non-time trial bicyclists will start shortly after the last time trial competitor.
Both events are free to HCC annual members. Non-members will pay a $10 one day membership fee. The annual membership fee is $20.
