A large breakout early Thursday erupted lava onto the floor of Puu Oo Crater, U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports.

A large breakout early Thursday erupted lava onto the floor of Puu Oo Crater, U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports.

The breakout on the northeast side of the crater floor, which continued to spill lava onto the floor of the crater until about midnight, did not pose a threat to any nearby communities, scientists said Friday. Scientists were expected to head to the eruption site Friday to map the extent of the flow.

Meanwhile, the June 27 lava flow remained active within 5 miles of the Puu Oo vent. Smoke plumes, generated by lava creeping into forested areas, also remain visible.

At Kilauea Volcano’s summit, no significant change in the lava lake level was recorded overnight Thursday into Friday despite the volcano beginning to show signs of inflation. As of Friday morning, the lake, which continued to experience spattering on its surface, was within 190 feet of the rim of Overlook Vent on the floor of Halemaumau Crater.
