High surf advisory in effect for west-facing shores

A high surf advisory has been posted for west-facing shores of the Big Island through 6 p.m. Saturday.

National Weather Service forecasters say a west swell will bring elevated surf to west-facing shores of the Kona and Kohala coasts. Wave heights are expected to be between 5 and 8 feet.

Forecasters cautioned the public to be wary of strong breaking waves, shore break and strong longshore and rip currents that can make swimming difficult and dangerous. Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers are encouraged to heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and to exercise caution if entering the water.
