Heavy rainfall in Hilo, Puna and Ka’u has prompted a flood advisory through 5:15 p.m. Tuesday.
At 2:12 p.m., radar showed moderate to heavy rainfall over the South Hilo, Puna and Ka’u districts. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, according to forecasters with the Honolulu-based Natioanl Weather Service office. The largest area of rain was moving toward Highway 11, near Keaau, Kurtistown and Mountain View. Additional rainfall is expected to develop over the southeast portion of the island during the next several hours.
Other locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Glenwood, Pepeekeo, Papaikou, Pahoa, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Hawaiian Beaches, Hilo, Pahala, Wood Valley and Naalehu.
The public should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions.
