Hawaii Island police have charged a Mountain View man for several offenses stemming from an incident that occurred on Thursday, at a residence on Mauna Lani Track Road in Mountain View.
Jomal Ford, 37, was charged with four counts of attempted first-degree murder, and one count of resisting an order to stop. His bail has been set at $2,001,000.
The charges stem from Ford’s alleged attempt to run over two sheriffs and a police officer, with the fourth attempted murder in the first degree charge involving attempting to kill more than one person.
Officers and state sheriff’s deputies were attempting to serve a bench warrant at the home when a vehicle sped toward the officers in a threatening manner, according to officers. In response, a police officer fired three shots and a sheriff’s deputy fired two shots toward the vehicle, striking the operator.
Ford was initially taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment of a gunshot wound, but was released late Thursday night. He is presently being held at the Hilo cellblock until he is arraigned in court. The sheriff who was struck by Ford’s vehicle was also treated for minor injuries at Hilo Medical Center and released late Thursday night.
