Schools invited to nominate beautification projects

The Cooke Foundation has issued a call for nominations for the Cooke Beautification Award, which recognizes public schools for completing significant beautification projects on campus. The biennial award has honored elementary, middle and high schools across the state with $85,000 in awards since 2008, for contributing to the overall appearance and ambiance of their campuses through murals, landscaping, gardens, mosaics and other enhancement projects.

All public schools in the state, including charter schools, are eligible to nominate completed beautification projects that demonstrate significant improvement of the property through Sept. 1. One elementary school, one middle school and one high school will be selected to receive a $5,000 award. Details and submission information are posted at cookefdn.org.

GVS Accelerator meeting is today

A GVS Accelerator open house will be held at 4 p.m. today at Honua Studios, 73-4855 Kanalani St., Kailua-Kona.

The GVS Accelerator is a partnership between Global Virtual Studio, the Hawaii Strategic Development Corp., Hawaii County and the GTA Development Fund. The program aims to empower Hawaii’s creative entrepreneurs to launch their original transmedia franchises.

The program includes a $50,000 seed investment and access to entertainment and innovation industry insiders such as producer Ralph Winter (“X-Men,” “Fantastic Four” and “Planet of the Apes”), Academy Award nominated screenwriter Tab Murphy (“Gorillas in the Mist,” “Tarzan” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”), Mike Frank (co-founder of Level 3 Communications) and Lance Priebe (creator and co-founder of Club Penguin).

Applications are accepted through Aug. 31. This year individual entrepreneurs/producers may apply as well as startup teams — the former to be “match-made” with selected startup companies. To apply, visit gvsaccelerator.com for more information.
