Heavy rainfall over North Kohala has prompted a flood advisory for the Big Island until 3 p.m. Tuesday.
At 11:42 a.m., radar showed heavy rain over the windward side of the North Kohala district with rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour. Additional rainfall is expected to develop over other areas of the North and South Kohala districts during the next couple of hours, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
Other locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Hawi, Kapaau, Waikoloa, Kawaihae and Waimea.
The public is advised to stay away from streams, draining ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions because of ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
