There were 21 arrests for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Aug. 10 and Sunday, the Hawaii Police Department reports. Ten of those drivers were in an accident. One driver was younger than 21.
So far this year, there have been 649 DUI arrests compared with 741 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.4 percent.
There have been 940 major accidents so far this year compared with 992 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.2 percent.
So far this year, there were 15 traffic fatalities on the island, compared with nine fatalities during the same period last year, an increase of 66.7 percent. One fatality that occurred on July 18 was reclassified to a medical condition. There were eight fatalities related to drugs only and three as the result of a combination of drugs and alcohol.
Locally the most arrests were the 13 in Kona, with three in South Kohala, three in South Hilo and one each in Hamakua and Puna.
